Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that infects the digestive system. Many people with H. pylori remain symptomless. However, it can cause digestive disorders, including gastritis, peptic ulcers, and certain types of stomach cancer. Detection of specific IgM antibodies is evidence of a current or recent infection. A demonstration of specific IgG to the bacteria is evidence of past infection.
