Rubella (also known as epidemic roseola or German measles) is a disease caused by the rubella virus. It is transmitted from person to person by tiny droplets that are inhaled. Rubella can cause a miscarriage or severe birth defects if a woman is infected while pregnant, especially during the first trimester.
In the absence of a current or recent infection, a demonstration of specific IgG on a serum sample is evidence of immunity to rubella.
